Top court for states on government doctors quota in postgraduate courses

 

New Delhi:

The Supreme Court on Monday said that states have the right to make special provisions for giving quota in admission to PG courses to government doctors serving in remote areas.


A five-judge constitution bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra said states have the legislative capacity to make special provisions for reservation.

The apex court held that the Medical Council of India (MCI) regulation which forbids such reservation is arbitrary and unconstitutional.

The bench said that MCI is a statutory body and has no power to make provisions for reservation.

The Tamil Nadu Medical Officers Association and others contended that the benefits of reservation from the decision would give a boost to those working in government hospitals and rural areas.

The bench also included Indira Banerjee, Vineet Saran, MR Shah and Anirudh Bose.

Rajasthan women can travel free in-state buses on Raksha Bandhan

Jaipur: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday announced free travel for girls and women in-state roadways buses on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. Raksha Bandhan is falling on 3 August this year. No fare will be charged from passengers in general and express buses of Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (except AC, Volvo and All India Permit buses) within the state. According to a release, women and girls will be able to get free ride in the buses of Jaipur City Transport Services Limited.
