Manoj Sinha Appointed J&K Lieutenant Governor After GC Murmu Resigns

New Delhi:

Senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Manoj Sinha Appointed the new Lt. Governor of Jammu and Kashmir after Girish Chandra Murmu resigned yesterday.

The major change on the first anniversary of the Centre's move to grant special status to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 and convert it into two union territories brings a political face back to the top post.

Manoj Sinha, 61, has been a Lok Sabha MP and a member of the National Council, the top leadership panel of the BJP. He was the Minister of State in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first term.

A year after the abolition of Jammu and Kashmir's special status, the appointment of Mr. Manoj Sinha is being seen as an attempt to revive the political process in Jammu and Kashmir. Sources say that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may also visit Srinagar in the coming days.

"It depends on how Delhi wants to proceed," an official said last night when the name of Mr. Manoj Sinha was to be announced. The retired bureaucrat who served in the Cabinet Secretariat said, "If he wants to start a political activity, he has to appoint someone who can join politicians and political parties."

Compared to GC Murmu, the Center wanted to see Jammu and Kashmir through massive changes, once upon a time there was a bureaucrat. His predecessor Satyapal Mallik was another political face at the time, who was in the news for making controversial statements.

A Gujarat cadre officer, Mr. Murmu worked with PM Modi as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. After Mr. Modi became Prime Minister, officials joined the Union Ministry of Finance. He became Joint Secretary in the Department of Expenditure.

The senior bureaucrat was expected to retire on November 30 last year.
