Manmohan Singh, AK Antony said after Sonia Gandhi’s announcement

Shortly after Sonia Gandhi asked her Congress colleagues to start looking for her replacement, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urged her to continue. Another senior leader, AK Antony, said that if he does not continue, Rahul Gandhi should hold the post of party president.


Sonia Gandhi's decision comes after widespread controversy over the leaking of a letter written by 23 top Congress leaders demanding "full-time, visible leadership" and to bring about comprehensive reforms in the organization and its elections Having said.


Manmohan Singh, the third to speak at the Virtual Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, asked Sonia Gandhi to remain the party president until the plenary session of the All India Congress Committee, where the process of scouting for the new chief could begin. He also targeted the signatories of the letter.

"The letter is unfortunate," the former PM reportedly said. He remarked that "weakening the high command is weakening the Congress".

Speaking after Manmohan Singh, senior leader AK Anthony said: "More than the letter, the content of the letter was cruel." He also talked about the "sacrifice of Sonia Gandhi" and urged Rahul Gandhi to take over as Congress president, according to sources.

The explosive letter talked about "uncertainty" over leadership and "drift" in the party, stating that it had demoralized workers and weakened the party.

The signatories include Kapil Sibal, Shashi Tharoor, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Prithviraj Chavan, Vivek Tankha and Anand Sharma. The letter stressed that Gandhism would always be an integral part of "collective leadership".

A furious Rahul Gandhi intervened and accused the ruling BJP of signing a letter to work in closets. He asked why the letter attacked the Congress when the Congress was struggling with crises in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan and when the Congress President (Sonia Gandhi) was unwell.
