New Delhi:
GC Murmu, who resigned a day before as the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, has been appointed as the new Auditor General of the country. Mr. Murmu resigned from his post on Wednesday and Manoj Sinha was appointed as his successor.
The post of Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) was expected to be vacant this week as Rajiv Mehrishi turns 65. The Comptroller and Auditor General is a constitutional post and cannot be left vacant.
A senior bureaucrat at the Cabinet Secretariat told NDTV on Thursday, "Rajiv Mehrishi turns 65 on August 8. So the government is in a hurry.
A highly influential post, former Comptroller and Auditor General Vinod Rai wrote a report that began the 2G telecom spectrum scandal, widely seen as one of the biggest contributors to the Congress' 2014 debacle. . In the years since, the report failed to be placed in court.
Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Mr Murmu's resignation came after media reports disputed that he said elections in the union territory could be held after the ongoing delimitation exercise. Elections in Jammu and Kashmir have not been held in two years since the elected government collapsed citing security concerns.
Reacting to the reports, the Election Commission had emphatically stated that the decision on the timing of the election can only be made by it.
The GC Murmu-led Jammu and Kashmir administration has also faced controversy over its opposition to restore 4G Internet services in the Union Territory. It cited increased terrorist activity in the Supreme Court in response to petitions for resumption of high-speed Internet as the reason behind its move.
The official said that Mr. Murmu, a 1985-batch Gujarat cadre officer, worked with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After Mr. Modi became Prime Minister, officials joined the Union Ministry of Finance. He became part of the Department of Expenditure as Joint Secretary.
The senior bureaucrat was expected to retire on November 30 last year. But before that, he was appointed the first Lieutenant-Governor of Jammu and Kashmir after coming to the two union territories of the state in October.
