Electricity is produced 74 years after the independence of Jammu and Kashmir

 New Delhi:

Infrastructure along the Line of Actual Control along the Indo-Pakistan border is steadily growing. After Keeran, Machil in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir has become the second region to get 24-hour power supply for the first time since independence, i.e. 74 years after India became independent.

Principal Secretary (Electricity- J&K) Rohit Kansal told NDTV that Keran got electricity around Independence Day and now in the second phase electricity has reached the villages also. Soon, we will also provide electricity to the remaining difficult areas. Providing connectivity to all border areas by next year.

Till now, 20 villages of Machil sector were being provided electricity through Diesel Generator (DG) sets, but now they will get electricity through electricity grid.

District Collector Anshul Garg of Kupwara said, "We have kick-started by providing electricity in nine villages, but in the next 20 days all the remaining villages will also get 24x7 electricity through the grid."

Like Keran, Machil used to get three hours of electricity in the evening. "Power through the DG set had loads of problems such as diesel availability and distribution and was therefore very unreliable, but now the power grid is organized," explains an engineer who works in that area.

According to him, Machil is the northernmost part of the country and is a difficult terrain, so erecting the pillars was a difficult task.

He said, "The system now installed can generate electricity without any problem and can also spread electricity."

Machil Kupwara is about 65 km from the district headquarters and remains cut off from the rest of the valley for about six months.

Since it is located along the Line of Control, many infiltration cases occur from this area. It is one of the areas that gets a lot of firepower.

"This is also good news from a security perspective," said a security official.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has instructed Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to lift the infrastructure in terms of both connectivity and power in icy areas from the LoC.

Officials claim that around ₹ 3,000-4,000 crore was given to Jammu and Kashmir under the head of power distribution under the Prime Minister's Relief Package.

A senior official told NDTV, "But for one reason or other projects were delayed but now the work has taken its momentum and we hope to provide electricity in all the difficult areas."

According to him all border areas will now be brought on a common line in a phased manner. "The capacity of the system - from diesel to electricity - has been strengthened and in a year the electrification will be completed in Jammu and Kashmir border areas and this will provide great relief to the people living there."
