Digital avatar of IIT Bombay Students in Virtual Convocation

Mumbai / New Delhi:

The novel became the first major institution to give a face-to-face lecture amidst the coronavirus epidemic this month after the IIT Bombay (Indian Institute of Technology), which held its 58th convocation in a "virtual reality mode" on Sunday.

Although students could not gather for the convocation ceremony, where Nobel Prize winner Professor Duncan Haldane was invited as the chief guest, he was seen with guests in his digital avatar on a virtual stage.

It is the first time in the institute's 62-year history that it awarded medals, awards and degrees to virtual avatars of students on the day of convocation.

"There is a lesson in research for everyone," said Professor de Halden, a British-origin physicist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2016, during a nearly two-hour-long program.

"India has staked its claim as one of the world's great innovation hubs," guest Stephen A. Schwarzman described in an official statement as "a world-renowned investor and philanthropist". The guests virtually addressed the students.

In one video, a student has been awarded the "President of India's Medal for 2020".

In June, IIT-Bombay became the first major institution to deliver all face-to-face lectures for the rest of the year. In a Facebook post, IIT Bombay director Subhasis Chaudhuri said: "For IIT Bombay, students are the first priority. We have decided in India how to bring a closure in the current semester to help our students, the first in India. Step up. "

"But given the current state of the epidemic, how do we plan the next semester for our students? Then, after lengthy deliberations in the Senate, we have decided that the next semester will be run purely in online mode . " He said that there is no compromise for the safety and well-being of the students.

He also appealed to help the needy students. Mr. Chaudhuri wrote on Facebook, "We have estimated that we need cr 5 crore to help those needy students. We look forward to their overwhelming support to help these bright young minds."

Maharashtra is by far the most affected state in the country with 6.7 lakh cases. In India, more than 3 million cases have been reported since the onset of the epidemic.
