CWC Meet Live Updates: Congress Meet Today; Sonia Gandhi decides to quit as party chief
New Delhi:
The executive committee of the Congress, the party's top decision-making body, will meet today by more than 20 top party leaders amid a widespread controversy calling for comprehensive reform, introspection and "a full-time, visible leadership".
73-year-old Sonia Gandhi is set to announce her decision to resign as interim president. Prior to the meeting of the party's top decision-making body, sources said that he could give the party a deadline to find a new chief.
Sources said more than 20 Congress leaders, in a letter, asked for "full-time", "effective leadership", which would be "visible" and "proactive". Sources said it also called for "honest introspection" and suggested a "collective leadership", which included decentralization of reform power, empowerment of state units and organizational elections at every level, the sources said.
The working committee meeting last month saw arguments and fierce criticism by young leaders who have since blamed the previous government of the party for the huge losses. The youth leaders reportedly said that those who were part of the previous UPA government should take the blame for the rapid decline of the Congress.
