Center accuses Delhi of pushing for low COVID-19 test

The Union Home Ministry on Thursday termed the allegation as baseless saying that it is pressurizing the Delhi government not to extend the COVID-19 test to 40,000 in the national capital.

A Home Ministry spokesman said that significant improvement in COVID-19 situation in Delhi has been possible due to testing and other control measures.

"The allegation raised in the letter of the Health Minister of the Government of Delhi on 27 August 2020, addressed to the Union Home Secretary, to the effect that the MHA is pressurizing the Delhi Government officials not to extend the tests in Delhi, wrong and baseless. The Home Ministry said that after the intervention of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, daily tests in Delhi, which averaged around 4,000 a day by mid-June 2020, took place in a calibrated manner of about 18-20,000 per day.

"As the MHA pressurized the Delhi government to extend the trial without any basis, there is any such allegation," the spokesperson said.

The Ministry of Home Affairs said that Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain's letter rejected a note from Delhi government officials and the note made no mention of any instructions from the MHA on the matter of increased testing in Delhi.

The note only proposed that the views of an expert committee headed by VK Paul be taken on the proposed increase in testing in Delhi for technical guidance on various issues like mixing of RT-PCR and rapid antigens, categories of geographical areas And the spokesperson etc. said.

Mr Jain, in his letter to Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, alleged that the Ministry of Home Affairs was "interfering and pressurizing Delhi government officials" to prevent the COVID-19 trials in the city from being increased to 40,000.

Mr. Jain claimed that the Delhi government has been able to control the coronavirus by working on a policy of greater testing to identify and isolate COVID-19 patients.

Mr. Jain wrote to the Union Home Secretary, "But I was shocked when some officials told that the Delhi authorities were being pressured not to extend the trial further in Delhi."

Coronovirus cases have been increasing in Delhi since last few days. On Wednesday, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal held a meeting with officials and decided to conduct the current tests at around 20,000 to 40,000 a day.
