3 people killed in police firing in Bengaluru

 Bengaluru: Three people were killed and 60 policemen were injured in a police shootout after violence erupted in Bengaluru on Tuesday on a Facebook message allegedly posted by a relative of a Congress MLA. 110 people have been arrested for violence, stone-pelting and assault on police personnel.


The protesters set fire to around two dozen cars and surrounded the house of Congress MLA Srinivas Murthy in the Karnataka capital. Mr. Murthy's nephew Naveen, who allegedly posted the message on Facebook, has been arrested.

Police used lathicharge, tear gas and firing to disperse the violent mob. He said, the incidents took place in DG Holi and KG Halli areas in the eastern part of Bengaluru.

"DG Holi and KG Halli witnessed violent incidents. To bring it under control, the police used lathi-charge, tear gas, and firing. The Commissioner of Police went to the spot. The police are at the site of the bandage. Strict action against those criminals. Will." Bengaluru Police posted on Twitter.

200 bikes kept at a police station were set on fire. A police station was damaged in the violence.

Bengaluru Police Commissioner Kamal Pant said that the situation has been brought under control. While curfew has been imposed in the violence-hit areas of DG Holi and KG Halli till yesterday morning, large ceremonies have been banned in the rest of Bengaluru city.

At least one journalist was injured when police came under fire while reporting on the violence.

In a tweet this morning, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa condemned the attack and said stern action will be taken against those involved in the violence.

The Congress MLA released a video late last night and appealed to the people to maintain peace. Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai also issued a video message saying that people should not take the law into their own hands.

He condemned the incidents of arson and looting and said additional police forces have been sent to the worst-hit areas. He said the police were given a free hand to bring the situation under control.

Senior Congress leader Dinesh Gundu Rao appealed to the people not to take the law in their hands.

He said on Twitter, "Terrible situation in Pulakeshinagar after the attack on our MLA @AkhandaSrinivas's house and Kaval Byrasandra police station. In the event of any provocation, no one can take the law into their own hands and destroy public property Is, ”he said on Twitter.

"I urge all people to remain calm and the government to handle this delicate situation firmly, but certainly not play politics anymore. I see a conspiracy in the way of excluding Facebook posts and such Seems to have been done to provoke disturbances., "He adds.
